The gotcha most consultants miss

Consulting clients pay slowly when they can't tell what they got. Always attach a one-page deliverable summary to the invoice (or note in the line item description: 'Q2 retainer covered ... included memo dated ...'). Make the value scannable.

Typical rates for consultants in 2026

Independent management consultants charge $150–$500/hour depending on specialty. Retainer-style engagements at the executive-advisor level run $3,000–$10,000/month for a few hours of weekly time.
