Recommended payment terms

Net 30 is industry standard with agencies (you can't fight it). Net 14 with direct clients. Always invoice IMMEDIATELY on delivery - translation agencies pay on 30/60/90 cycles and the clock starts at invoice date.

The gotcha most translators miss

Word-count source matters. Define on every invoice: 'Source-language word count via [tool name].' Otherwise the client recounts in Word vs your CAT tool's output and disputes. Pricing per source word, not target, also protects you on languages that expand (EN → DE expands ~30%).

Typical rates for translators in 2026

Rates vary wildly by language pair and specialization. Generalist EN ↔ FR/ES/DE: $0.10–$0.18/word. Specialist (legal, medical, technical): $0.18–$0.35/word. Rare language pairs and certified translation: higher still.
