Invoice template for tutors.

Tutoring invoices are usually paid by parents, not students - which means clarity matters more than for any other freelance discipline. Sessions, no-shows, prep time, and materials all need to appear on the invoice or get disputed.

What this template includes

  • · 4 sample line items for tutors
  • · Recommended payment terms
  • · The #1 invoicing gotcha for tutors
  • · Real rate-range data for 2026

Sample line items for tutors

The line items below are the shapes most tutors use. Copy them, adjust to your scope, fold them into the invoice format your accounting tool spits out.

DescriptionQtyRate
SAT prep sessions - May (8 × 60 min)8$95/session
Practice test review + written feedback2$60 each
Materials - practice book + answer key1$25 flat
No-show / late-cancel fee (1 session)1$45 flat

Recommended payment terms

Net 7 from invoice date. Many tutors collect upfront for a 4-session block - it eliminates Net-anything and reduces no-shows. If you bill monthly, send the invoice the 1st of the following month.

The gotcha most tutors miss

Cancellation policy is the tutor's invoice survival kit. State explicitly: '24-hour cancellation policy. Cancellations under 24 hours billed at full session rate.' Without this, you'll spend half your unpaid time chasing makeup sessions or absorbing no-shows.

Typical rates for tutors in 2026

Subject tutors charge $40–$90/session. SAT/ACT prep specialists charge $80–$150/session. Tutors at top firms or one-on-one private contractors with strong outcomes charge $200–$500+/session.
